Program Extension

F/M students who do not complete their program of study by the expiration date noted on their Form I-20 or DS-2019 must apply for a program extension before their forms expire. Failure to extend your stay could jeopardize your legal status.

Program Extension for F-1 Students

To initiate an I-2O Extension, please click the "F-M Extension Request" button below.
  1. Send an electronic request your academic advisor, asking them to complete and submit a form that approves your program extension.
  2. Upload proof of your financial support for extended period up to one year (award letter, TDU assistantship letter, bank or investment statement).
PLEASE NOTE: The extension procedure will extend your I-20 but not your visa stamp. If you have an expired visa stamp in your passport, you are permitted to remain in the US. with a valid I-20. The next time, however, you travel out of the US and need to reenter, you will still need to apply for a new visa stamp at a US Consulate prior to your return to the US.

Program Extension for M-1 Students

Three-year Maximum The M-1 visa is limited to a maximum of three years presence in the U.S. for study. No extension beyond 3 years will be approved by ISSS. If you are not able to complete the full degree within the maximum 3-year period allowed by the M-1 visa, you would be required to return to your home country to apply for the appropriate visa to re-enter the U.S. to continue your studies to complete your degree.
