There are some exceptions to the full time study rule. However, you must obtain special permission from OISS prior to reducing your course load.
Academic Reduced Course Load
Academic Difficulties
Acceptable reasons to reduced your course load due academic difficulties include:- Initial English language difficulties or reading requirements
- Unfamiliarity with US teaching methods
- Improper course level placement
Final Semester
If you need less than full-time enrollment in the final semester of your program to complete your degree requirements.
Completed Course Work
If you are a graduate student who is completed with all of your required credits and only need to complete your thesis or dissertation.

To request an academic reduced course load (RCL), you will need:- To complete a RCL request form
- Request electronic approval from your academic advisor for the RCL.
- To read and confirm that you understand the terms and conditions of apply for and recieving an academic RCL.
Medical Reduced Course Load
If you have a temporary illness or medical condition that prevents you from maintaining full time enrollment, you may apply for a medical RCL.
If you believe you are eligible for a reduced course load for based on a medical condition, click the "Request Medical RCL" button below.
To request a medical reduced course load (RCL), you will need:- To complete a RCL request form
- Attach a signed letter from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist that substantiates your illness or medical condition.
- To read and confirm that you understand the terms and conditions of apply for and recieving a medical RCL.
